A blog about tips and ideas to use in your reading classroom!

Introduction

It’s that time of year again when I am looking through back-to-school resources. As teachers, we know the first day of school as well as the first weeks of school are important! This is the time when we set the tone for our classroom and school year.

I like to start the school year off with fun activities mixed in with teaching procedures and routines. I am serious about structure, procedures, and routines. Without these things, I feel chaos can quickly happen!

We definitely need a balance of fun and seriousness in the classroom.

In this blog post, I will talk about a couple of my back-to-school resources that are in my TPT store. Products that I created from my teaching experience to help students enjoy their first days of school!

First Grade Bundle

First Week of School Activities Bundle for First Grade

This first grade bundle includes lap books that students can tell about their summer break. When creating this product I was sensitive to the fact that some students don’t travel during the break. That for some students their summer is spent at home. I was sure to include general prompts like I played …, I watched…, I read… Not only are this lap books for summer break but I have also created lap books for fall/autumn, winter, and spring. All are included!

In this bundle you also get my best selling reading interest survey. This reading survey will help you to learn more about your students’ reading habits and interests.

Do you need some time for you students to work independently? Well, the all about me mini-books are perfect for this. Students can draw, write, and color independently while you handle a classroom task. Students will need assistance with cutting out the books and stapling them.

Back To School Resources: Second and Third Grades

The free “Ask A Classmate” Back to School Ice breaker works well with second and third grade students. Students walk around the classroom looking for classmates who have done certain activities over the summer. Once they have found someone who has done an activity. They have that student write their name on the line of their paper. Great way to have students introduce themselves to others and connect.

Up next is the second and third grade back to school bundle. This bundle features four products that you can use in your classroom during the first days of school. It also includes my best selling reading interest survey. Hands-on and independent activities students can do are the lap books, word searches, word scrambles, and crack-the-code activities.

Lastly is the back to school word searches and activities which is part of the back to school bundle. Students can work independently on creating a lap book about how they spent their summer break. They can also work on word searches, word scrambles, and crack-the-code activities. All are great for when you want students to work independently and quietly.

I have three products that are great to use with fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. I will be using these products with my sixth grade classes this year!

Use the word search, word scramble, and crack-the-code worksheets to incorporate fun in the classroom. Use it while you take a break from working on procedures and routines. These activities are great for having students work independently or with a partner. Help students relax from learning about new procedures and routines with word searches and other mind-stimulating activities that are included.

In the Back to School Getting To Know You Activities students will have 5 activities to choose from that allow them to tell others about themselves. This product has a mix of writing, drawing, and hands on activities. This product allows for students to be creative in expressing who they are while telling about themselves. Two of the five activities can also be used as bulletin board ideas!

The back to school bundle has both of the products I mentioned above. As well as some content area products that are great to use at the beginning of the year. You will find a reading and writing survey that you can give to your class during the first days of school. These surveys allow for you to see your students reading and writing interests and habits.

I use both of these surveys each year and gain great information about my students that helps me in the classroom. I have also included a mini reading response book that works well with any fiction or nonfiction text. And lastly, I’ve included the novel study choice board product. This product is great to use with novel studies, you get 2 choice boards with 17 activities (technology choices included too). My students enjoy the variety of choices I have given them on the choice boards. Plus the enjoy having templates to use as a guide.
